Repairing a leaky compression faucet is one of the most common service calls a professional plumber receives. This is because compression faucets are one of the most commonly installed fixtures in bathrooms and kitchens.
The inner workings of compression faucets are simple. Turning the handle counter-clockwise raises a threaded stem with a rubber washer on the end, allowing water to flow through the valve. Rotating it the other way lowers the stem, and the washer seals off the water flow.
Water-wasting dripping can occur when continuous contact between the washer and valve seat wears the rubber down, so that it no longer seals properly. For a qualified plumber with the necessary tools, repairing a leaky compression faucet is a straightforward task.
- First, the water supply to the faucet is shut off, usually at a valve beneath the sink. In houses where the faucets don’t have individual shut-off valves, the main water valve will need to be closed.
- The faucet handle is then removed from the knurled end of the valve stem. It’s usually secured by a Phillips screw concealed beneath a decorative plug on top of the handle.
- Once the handle is removed, a retaining nut that holds the valve stem must be unscrewed. This may be a standard hex nut or a stem nut that requires a special tool or slip-joint pliers to loosen.
- The stem is then removed by unscrewing it in a counterclockwise direction. Your plumber will inspect your washer to find the source of the leak, and then unscrew the washer retaining screw to remove the washer.
- After a new replacement washer is secured to the stem, the condition of your valve seat will be checked. If it’s worn or if mineral deposits are present, your plumber will use a valve-seat dresser to gently smooth the surface of the valve seat, ensuring a water-tight seal for your new washer.
- After reassembly, the water supply to your faucet is restored and proper leak-free operation is verified.
