How to Avoid Costly Plumbing Leaks This Winter

How to Avoid Costly Plumbing Leaks This Winter Since winter has surprised us a few times already this year in Calgary, it’s more important now than ever to take precautions that can help you avoid costly plumbing leaks. Because of our extremely cold temperatures, your water pipes may be in danger of freezing and bursting if you don’t prepare them. There are some things homeowners can easily do to protect their plumbing.

Outdoor Water Sources

Disconnect any hoses that are attached to your outdoor faucets and store them during the winter. If you have interior shut-off valves for your outdoor faucets, close them. Once they’re closed, head back outside and open the faucets to drain any water, so it doesn’t freeze and cause a burst pipe. If water continues to drip from your faucets, have a plumber inspect your shut-off valves.

Insulate Unprotected Pipes

Trace all of your water pipes and insulate any that are bare, especially those located near outside walls. You can pick up foam insulation made especially for pipes. Make sure they contain a slit along the length that allows you to fit them over the pipe. If they don’t have adhesive edges, use some duct tape to ensure they stay on well.

Thoroughly Inspect for Water Leaks

Cold weather can make water leaks worse, and the last thing you want to deal with during the winter is a major issue with your water supply. Check all of your water valves, pipe joints, drains and faucets for any drips or leaks. If a simple tightening fixes the problem, just be sure not to over-tighten and check the affected area within a couple of hours to make sure it doesn’t leak again. If there are leaks you’re unable to fix, call a plumber to repair them right away.
