Here’s How You Can Read and Understand the EnerGuide Label

Purchasing new appliances for your home gives you the opportunity to install the most energy-efficient equipment possible. Products with high efficiency can save you significant amounts of money over time through lower monthly operating costs. As you look, check for the Canadian EnerGuide label. This label, in combination with the American EnergyGuide label, will tell you important information about how much energy the device will consume and the amount it will cost to operate.

Canadian products such as appliances, HVAC equipment, and other energy-consuming items such as light bulbs carry the EnerGuide label. It may be affixed to the product as a hanging tag or an adhesive tag. This label provides detailed information on how much energy a particular product uses during normal operations. The label will also tell you how the product’s energy use compares to that of similar models.

An EnerGuide label will contain four important pieces of information about the equipment or produce:

  1. The model number
  2. The type and capacity of produce models in its particular class
  3. The amount of energy the model will consume annually, expressed in kilowatt hours (kWh)
  4. An energy consumption indicator, which indicates how the product’s energy usage compares to the most efficient and least efficient models in its class.

The EnerGuide label must be displayed on certain types of appliances and home equipment:

  • Room air conditioners
  • Electric ranges, cooktop stoves, and ovens
  • Dishwashers
  • Freezers
  • Clothes washers
  • Clothes dryers
  • Refrigerators, refrigerator-freezers, and wine chillers

The EnerGuide label can be displayed on other types of equipment, but doing so is voluntary:

  • Central air conditioners
  • Gas, oil, or propane furnaces
  • Air-source heat pumps
  • Gas fireplaces
  • Water heaters

If the product is also Energy Star-qualified, the Energy Star symbol will appear toward the bottom of the EnerGuide label. Products that are certified as being high efficiency will carry this symbol.
