Duct Cleaning: Plan Yours Before You Shut Up the House for Fall

Duct Cleaning: Plan Yours Before You Shut Up the House for FallWith fall approaching, poor indoor-air quality becomes a concern for many Calgary homeowners as they seal up their homes to prevent heating dollars from escaping through the home’s envelope. If you haven’t performed duct cleaning in recent memory, fall is a good time to call your HVAC technician to have your ducts sealed and cleaned to help maintain good indoor-air quality through the heating months.

Why Is Duct Cleaning Necessary?

Over time, dust and debris, and potentially a plethora of other contaminants collect inside the duct system. Since the ducts are sealed and inaccessible in many instances, frequent cleaning isn’t practical, which eventually leads to the buildup of debris and contaminants along duct walls and on HVAC components. Common contaminants include mould, mildew, hair, viruses, bacteria, fungi, insect and vermin parts and droppings and more.

If you’re not sure whether your ducts should be cleaned, ask your HVAC technician to perform a duct inspection during fall preventive maintenance of your heating system. Also, consider the following in your own home:

  • Are there dust and debris on the return registers?
  • Do the air filters always fit tightly to prevent air-bypass leakage?
  • Do musty odours permeate from the supply outlets?
  • Has your home ever had an insect or vermin issue?
  • Have occupant respiratory issues increased with no apparent cause?
  • Is there mould anywhere in your home?
