Does it seem like your furnace is running all the time?

Does it seem like your furnace is running all the time? We’ve got some troubleshooting tips for you!

Before you call Arpi’s suspecting something requires repair, please check out these tips:

If it is very cold outside (like -25 C!), then it is normal for the furnace to run continuously.

  • Is the furnace fan switch on the thermostat set to “on”?  There is an “auto” and “on/off” setting on your thermostat for your furnace’s fan setting.  If the fan is set to “on”, then it runs continuously until you tell it otherwise.
  • Some thermostats have a furnace fan setting program where the fan is set to cycle on and off every 20 minutes, for example. Check this out and it may be why your furnace fan seems to be running all the time.
  • In newer homes, there is a ventilation switch – is it turned “on”? If so, this is what is making it seem like your furnace fan is running all the time – and this is nothing to be worried about! – It is recommended to have your ventilation switch on a timer, so that it is automatic. This ensures adequate air quality within the home.
  • Do you have an exhaust fan over your gas stove with a “make-up air unit”?  If these two items are interconnected (and they should be), then your make-up air unit turns on when the stove’s exhaust fan is turned on.  Check this out and see if it’s on.
  • If your thermostat is calling for humidity because your humidity is set too high, this will turn the fan on and keep it running.  Your thermostat must have the humidifier control feature in it for this to occur.
  • Another possible reason your furnace fan is on could be that your Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) control is calling for circulation or dehumidification.

The above examples are normal operating situations.  It’s worth checking the various settings on your equipment before a Service Technician is dispatched because it’s possible that your furnace is running perfectly to how the control system is telling it to.
