Using A Programmable Thermostat to Save Energy and Improve Comfort

Using a programmable thermostat is one of the easiest ways to make a home more energy efficient. There are many different ways to increase the energy efficiency of a home but this is one of the cheapest ways to make a big difference and it will also save money on the monthly utility bill.

By using a programmable thermostat, you don’t have to remember to change the temperature when leaving each day. The settings on the thermostat can do all of this for you. Just set the schedule of the thermostat according to what temperatures you want it set at during different times of the day.

Many of the programmable thermostats on the market are capable of accepting up to six settings a day and can be set differently for different days of the week depending on our schedule. Digital programmable thermostats usually offer the most settings and features while electromechanical programmable thermostats are less complicated to set but do not offer as many features.

We suggest using a programmable thermostat by taking in to consideration what time everyone in the house goes to bed each night, wakes up each morning and arrives home during the day. Set the thermostat to an energy efficient setting where it will not be in use much during the times no one is home and at night.

Setting it to turn on and get the home to a good temperature in time for everyone waking up in the morning and arriving home later in the day will save energy by only turning the heat or air conditioning on when needed. If you sometimes need to temporarily alter the settings because the house feels a little cold or hot, use the temporary settings to turn it on for a few minutes here or there without needing to reconfigure the daily settings.

Our goal is to help educate our customers about energy and home comfort issues (specific to HVAC systems). For more information about programmable thermostats and other HVAC topics, click here to download our free Home Comfort Resource guide.
