Selecting An Air-Purification System? What To Look For

Research conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency shows that the air inside your home can be up to five times or sometimes even 100 times more polluted than air outside. Selecting an Air-Purification System for your home will help prevent a vast number of unhealthful pollutants from affecting you and your family. An air-purification system functions as a filter alongside your existing heating or cooling equipment. It removes airborne particles such as dust, mold and other bioaerosols that can have a negative effect on both your health and the comfort of your living space.

When selecting an air-purification system it is always a good idea to consult a professional contractor which will help you decide which system is best for your home. Currently the most effective systems are active carbon filters; however, Lennox has recently released a system called PureAir™ which not only removes the above-mentioned airborne particles but also reduces ozone — a known lung irritant — and utilizes hospital grade filtration components. An air-purification system will remove odors as well as potentially harmful chemical vapors. If anyone in your family suffers from allergies or asthma, an air-purification system may provide relief.

Here are some points to remember when planning the purchase of an air-purification system:

  • When consulting with your contractor, make sure that your air-purification unit is sized in accordance with the size of your home as well as your current heating or cooling system as the two will work in conjunction.
  • Regular home purification systems should have their filters and lamps changed at least once a year to maintain efficiency and optimal functioning of the equipment.
  • Make sure that you receive at least a five-year warranty on your system’s components.
  • Be sure to keep all air ducts and air-conditioning coils clean and properly charged to prevent potential malfunctions with the equipment.

It is advisable to have a contractor do a semi-annual maintenance service on your system. Try to schedule these for the beginning of each heating or cooling season.
