Learn the Best Cooling Solutions for Home Additions

Learn the Best Cooling Solutions for Home AdditionsAs you’re probably aware, decisions regarding the design and construction of new home additions are big ones. There’s a lot at stake, and you don’t want any do-overs. Determining the best cooling solutions for home additions is no exception. Consider your options carefully and work closely with your HVAC professional.

Energy Audit and Load Calculation

Consider conducting an energy audit of your home. You’ll receive efficiency upgrade suggestions and an estimated return on investment (ROI) report for each system improvement. Following efficiency upgrades, a load calculation should be performed, including the new home addition, so you’ll have more information to base your decision for cooling the new space.

Extend Air Ducts to Existing System

One of the simplest and most logical cooling solutions for home additions is extending your current duct system to the new space. This will only work if your current A/C and furnace can handle the extra load and the ducts can be balanced to provide sufficient and efficient airflow.

Upgrade Your HVAC System

In addition to cooling solutions, if your heating system shares the ductwork and blower with the air conditioner, you’ll also need to make decisions for heating the home addition. If your air conditioner is more than 10 years old, you may be better off upgrading to a new higher-efficiency cooling system. New A/Cs save 20 and 40 percent energy, depending on the age of your current model.

Your heating system should have the capacity to heat the new space if you’re planning on keeping it a few more years. If your furnace is older than 15 years, though, think about upgrading it.

Go With an Independent System

Installing independent cooling for additions is another alternative. An independent system gives your home two zones for energy savings. If the home addition is going to be frequently occupied, such as a family room or bedroom, this is a good option. Consider the benefits of going ductless for your home addition. You’ll enjoy superior cooling efficiency and comfort.
