High Energy Bills? Ceiling Fans Can Help Lower Air Conditioning Costs

High Energy Bills? Ceiling Fans Can Help Lower Air Conditioning CostsAre you looking for cost-effective ways to lower your air conditioning costs? Ceiling fans are a relatively inexpensive and effective way to enhance home comfort while also reducing high energy bills.

Ceiling fans significantly increase air circulation in rooms where they are used. In addition to enhancing comfort from this additional circulation, they also help move cool air that has settled near the floor. The drafts from a ceiling fan will cool you rather than the room, so you will feel 4 degrees cooler than the actual temperature inside the room. You could then set the thermostat 4 degrees higher while still maintaining the same level of comfort. Larger fans or fans with bigger blades will move more air and provide more cooling than smaller units.

When planning for the use of ceiling fans, install them only in rooms with ceilings eight feet high at a minimum. Fan blades should be mounted seven to nine feet above the floor and 10-12 inches below the surface of the ceiling. Keep fan blades at least 18 inches away from from the walls.

Ceiling fans can be effective in both winter and summer. In the summer, they should be set to blow air downward to increase general air circulation in the room. In the winter, this airflow should be reversed, letting the fans better circulate the warm air that rises and accumulates near the ceiling.

You can conserve even more energy by making sure ceiling fans are turned off when no one is in the room to need them. Unlike your main air conditioning systems, ceiling fans do not make rooms cooler, but instead cool the occupants of rooms.
