Boiler Troubleshooting: Getting to the Root of the Problem Before You Call for Repairs

When your boiler starts acting up, your first instinct may be to call your HVAC contractor. Although you may require some professional help, it’s always smart to get to the root of the problem through boiler troubleshooting before you schedule a technician. By taking the time to seek out the underlying cause, you can help the experts fix your problem faster. Here are three common boiler problems that you can troubleshoot for.

  • No heat or hot water – Though this may seem like a major catastrophe, a lack of heat and/or hot water production is actually a fairly common boiler issue. The first thing that you should do is take a look at your thermostat to ensure that the settings are correct and that it is functioning properly. The problem could also be due to low water levels. If your water gauge is reading low, you will need to check for any possible system leaks. When all else fails, your technician may need to do some boiler troubleshooting of his own as the problem could be broken diaphragms and airlocks or failing mechanical parts.
  • Strange sounds – When a boiler starts hissing, banging or gurgling, it could mean a variety of things. Start out by checking the water and pressure gauges of your system, as low levels could be creating the annoying noises. If this doesn’t appear to be the issue, your boiler could be kettling due to a buildup of lime scale on the system’s heat exchange.
  • System turning on and off frequently – If your system keeps on turning itself on or off when it isn’t supposed to, there could be an issue with your old thermostat. If the settings are right but the boiler is malfunctioning, ask your technician to check it out to see if you could benefit from a new programmable thermostat. Other issues could be low water pressure, or a lack of water flow due to a closed valve.
