Attic Ventilation: Why It’s Important For Your Home

Ventilation in the attic is a significant contributor to a healthy, energy-efficient home. Upgrading your home’s attic ventilation can lead to several benefits that will enhance your quality of life.

Without ventilation, heat and moisture can build up in the attic space, and eventually lead to roof damage and increased energy costs. Why?

  • In the summer, when heat builds up in the attic, the attic’s temperature will affect the temperature in your home, and cause your cooling system to have to overcompensate.
  • Moisture from precipitation and humidity tend to leak into the attic. When combined with air sealing, ventilation is the most effective way to keep moisture out of this space.
  • In the winter, it’s necessary for your attic to stay cool. If it’s too hot, snow on the roof will melt and move onto the eaves, where it will then freeze again and cause significant problems via ice damming.
  • Ventilation in the attic is also critical to healthy indoor air, because pollutants that exist in the home need a way out.

A mechanical ventilation system installed in the attic will ensure adequate circulation, protect the home and increase energy savings. A ventilation system is generally comprised of four factors:

  • Exhausting old air
  • Supplying fresh air
  • Circulating air around the home
  • Controlling the system

Your home probably already has some of these components in the form of bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans. Your furnace system can be retrofitted with an external duct to provide fresh-air supply; however, if you plan to run the blower continuously, talk with your HVAC contractor about energy consumption. To run a blower full-time, it should have an energy-efficient electronically commutated motor.

Another option is to install a heat recovery ventilator, which offers an equal supply and exhaust of air, while recovering energy from air that’s on its way out of the home and redirecting it to the incoming stream of air, thereby significantly reducing your energy bills.
