Stop the Sneeze! Allergy Tips

Stop the Sneeze! Allergy TipsCalgary has a lengthy allergy season that starts in the spring, during which an abundance of allergens, the substances that set off allergies, are generated by grass, flower and tree pollen. You can’t do much to keep the pollen from wafting around in the air, but you can take steps to control allergens in your home. Here are some allergy tips to live by.

1. Know your allergens.

Allergens derive from a number of sources in addition to pollen, including pet dander, mould, dust, insect parts and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It can take some work, but you need to find out what’s setting off your allergy, and control it at the source. It may be worth being tested by an allergy specialist to find out what you’re allergic to.

2. Use a good quality HVAC filter.

A cheap air filter won’t do much to improve indoor air quality, but a pleated filter, rated 8-12 on the MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) scale will trap many airborne particles that may be causing you distress. Change the filter regularly.

3. Control dust.

Dust can be composed of many particles you’re allergic to, including pet dander, insect parts, dust mites and pollen. Control dust by vacuuming frequently with a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter, and dusting with a microstatic cloth. Use a damp mop on floors. Have everyone remove shoes at the front door.

4. Control moisture.

High humidity in the home can lead to mould, fungus and mildew, so keep it under control. Fix plumbing and roof leaks as soon as they occur. Install exhaust ventilation to the outdoors in the kitchen and bathrooms. Keep a clean filter in the HVAC system (dirty air filters gather condensation and can harbor mould spores). If conditions are still damp, install a dehumidifier in the home.

5. Control pollen.

Keep doors and windows closed during pollen season. Brush clothes off or change them when coming in from outdoors. Confine pollen-bearing plants to one room and close the door.
