Not Too Hot and Not Too Cold: Make Your Water Temperature Just Right This Winter

Damien McCusker

There is no perfect setting for controlling water temperature. 49 C and 60 C are the two most common settings. Here is a brief reason to consider using 60 C as your default temperature setting.

Why You Should Not Set Your Hot-Water Heater to 49 C

Some hot water heaters are set to 49 C for various reasons such as lower energy usage, cheaper energy costs, and perceived safety reasons. However, this is not recommended as the bacteria that causes Legionnaires' Disease can contaminate hot water heaters that are set too low. Plus there are safer ways to reduce energy costs besides controlling water temperature.

Why Set Your Hot-Water Heater to At Least 60 C

There are good reasons to use a higher temperature as your default setting. One of these is if you or a member of your family has a weakened immune system or a respiratory-related illness. Water heated to 60 C is safer as a higher heat setting kills more pathogens, which can protect those more vulnerable to waterborne illnesses. In addition to this, if your dishwasher does not preheat water, a higher setting will be required to safely clean your dishes.

The Advantages of a Hot-Water Tank Mixing Valve

A hot-water tank mixing valve lets you have the best of both worlds in terms of the proper temperature setting. It keeps the water in your tank at 60 C, keeping it safe from waterborne contaminants. However, it mixes in cooler water to lower the temperature to 49 C when you turn the tap on, which helps prevent burns and keeps you and your family safe.
