Top Plumbing Problems in the Summer

Damien McCusker

summer plumbing problemsThe risk of frozen water pipes is a thing of the past, now that winter is behind us. But summer also brings its own set of potential plumbing problems. So what particular issues should you watch out for? Here are the top summer plumbing problems:

Sprinkler Leaks

Many homeowners take pride in bright green, well-manicured lawns, and use sprinkler systems to keep them that way. If you don't use your sprinkler system for several months, the equipment can succumb to wear and tear.

You may only notice a sprinkler leak after receiving a high water bill. Avoid this problem by thoroughly cleaning your sprinkler system before you start using it. Make sure you inspect it for leaks.

Garbage Disposal Problems

The summer weather calls for large parties and cookouts. Your kids will also be eating more at home. For all these reasons, your garbage disposal will get used often. Large quantities of leftovers can clog or damage it. Pay attention to what you put down your disposal. Make sure you don't put these common summer foods down the unit:

  • Hard fruits
  • Corn cobs
  • Fibrous vegetables
  • Grease
  • Starchy foods

After using your unit, run cold water for about 15 seconds to rinse away food.

Toilet Maintenance Issues

With kids at home, your toilet will get extra usage all season long. This will increase the chances of maintenance issues arising. Make sure you educate your kids on the appropriate toilet paper use. Clear toilet clogs with a flange plunger. If the problem persists, seek professional help.

Sewer Line Backups

Excessive water from the summer rains can get into sewer pipes through cracks and cause your sewer lines to back up. Tree roots that grow during the summer after the spring rains can creep into your sewer lines. Fix this problem by having a professional plumber inspect your pipes.

Be on the lookout for these common problems to prevent them from ruining your summer fun. To learn more about summer plumbing problems, contact us at Arpi's Industries. We've helped Calgary homeowners deal with HVAC and plumbing issues for over 50 years.
