Repair or Replace? How to Decide What's Best for Your HVAC System

Repair or Replace? How to Decide What's Best for Your HVAC SystemDeciding to repair or replace an HVAC system requires careful consideration of the age of your unit, the problems it's currently experiencing and whether or not further problems may occur down the road. To that end, you'll want to ask yourself the following questions as you decide whether to repair or replace your HVAC system:

  • Is the AC more than 10 years old? If it is, it's a good idea to replace your unit. Not only are they more prone to breakdowns as they age, but newer models offer greater efficiency, which can lead to long-term cost savings.
  • Is the furnace or boiler more than 15 years old? Again, the same principle applies here as old units are nearing the end of their serviceable lifespan.
  • Are your utility bills climbing? If they are, it could be because your unit isn't operating efficiently. If this is the case and you have a newer furnace, boiler, AC, etc., repairing your system is probably the best course of action.
  • Do you have excessive dust or humidity in the home? If you do, then it's probably a good time to have your ducts inspected. Leaky ducts not only impede proper airflow, but they can also facilitate dust and moisture buildup within your home.

The older your system, the more likely it will experience mechanical breakdowns. After about 10 years, breakdowns can start occurring regularly. For this reason, you can calculate a simple equation. Take the cost of your repairs and multiply that by the age of your equipment. If the sum is greater than $5,000, your best bet is to replace it with a new unit.

We invite you to contact Arpi's Industries, Ltd. to discuss your HVAC system with us and to ask our opinion as to whether or not repairing or replacing your system is the best course of action for your home.
