Can UV Lights Really Help Eliminate Furnace Smells?

Can UV Lights Really Help Eliminate Furnace Smells? Ultraviolet (UV) lights placed inside your furnace and ductwork can stop odors caused by your forced-air heating system. Mold isn't a pleasant thing to smell, and what it can do to your home if grown unchecked can be expensive to repair. This is because mold can damage many different surfaces.

Ultraviolet light sanitizes your outdoor environment by degrading the outer shell of mold spores, bacteria and viruses. When exposed to UV rays, these microbes lose their ability to reproduce. These lights may be the simplest and most effective way to keep odors and unhealthy indoor air under control.

Forced-air heating and cooling systems deliver conditioned air throughout your home through ductwork. Should any mold spores enter the blower compartment, they can land anywhere inside the ducts and grow. Mold requires food, moisture and warmth to thrive. If you've noticed a moldy odor whenever your furnace runs, chances are mold is growing inside.

Your trusted HVAC contractor can install UV lights inside your ductwork and the blower compartment to control mold growth. He can install a switch to turn them off when they need servicing.

UV light can damage eyesight and skin, which is why placing them inside your HVAC system is so advantageous. As your HVAC system runs, the air inside your home passes through the blower and ducts many times a day, exposing it to the UV rays for effective air cleaning.

Keeping the air filter in your HVAC system clean can reduce the amount of dust that collects on the bulbs. These lights also need changing once a year with normal use to maintain effective control over mold spores and other biological contaminants in the air.
