Air Cleaner or Air Purifier: What to Choose?With so many technologies, names, and acronyms used in regards to indoor air quality (IAQ), you may become confused or flustered when you're shopping for an air cleaner or air purifier. Even the terminology used for these air cleaning systems is shrouded in a bit of mystery. What's the difference, which is better, and what to choose?

To clear the air, so to speak, and expedite your search for the air cleaning system with the right features, the terms refer to the same thing and may be used interchangeably. Read on to learn about the available technologies used alone or combined with others in your next air cleaner (and air purifier).

HEPA Media Filter

High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters capture up to 99.97 percent of particles as tiny as 1/84,000th of an inch, or 0.3 microns. HEPA filters are very dense and trap common household pollutants, such as pet dander, micro-organisms, pollen, mites, and insecticide dust.

UV Lights

Ultraviolet (UV) light systems target moulds, viruses, and bacteria with their powerful short-wavelength radiation. The UV light penetrates the core of the cells in microorganisms and destroys its ability to reproduce. UV light systems are completely enclosed and safe for pets and people.

Photo Catalytic Oxidation (PCO)

Photo catalytic oxidation (PCO) filters have a high surface exchange capability, which means they work very well with UV light systems — allowing deep light absorption into the filter material. Choosing an air cleaner that combines UV lights and PCO decomposes organic contaminants into basic molecules, such as CO2 and H2O.

Electronic Air Cleaner

Many homeowners are attracted to electronic air cleaners because they operate silently and efficiently. As airborne contaminants enter the unit, they are electrically charged. The charged particles are attracted to oppositely-charged metal plates. The plates may be cleaned in your dishwasher every few months, left to air dry, and re-inserted into the unit.
