Look for an HVAC Tech With These Certifications

Phil Laprairie

If you're planning to hire an HVAC contractor for your Calgary or Alberta home, you need to know that the company you are hiring is going to deliver quality service. While many HVAC companies can claim that they have exceptional technicians, you need actual proof of the quality of the contractor. HVAC certifications and licensure is a good clue to the quality of a contractor or technician, and here are some certifications you want to look for.

Proper Licensing and Insurance

The most important credential to look for is a proper license. Licensure shows that the technician has the right training and is legally able to deliver the service you need. Ask to see proof of the licensure before you hire a technician.

Insurance, while technically not an HVAC certification, is another important qualification. Insurance provides protection if someone is injured or something is damaged during an HVAC installation. Without insurance, the HVAC tech is not only putting himself at risk, but also your home and the people in it.

Heating Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada Certification

In Canada, you also want to look for certification by the Heating Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI). HRAI represents over 1,300 HVAC industry professionals throughout Canada, and licensed contractors have shown a high level of professionalism and knowledge in the field. This certification is specific to HVAC contractors in Canada.

North American Technician Excellence

North American Technician Excellence (NATE) is a certification program that tests home comfort technicians on their knowledge of every aspect of the field. Technicians can get certified in general HVAC knowledge as well as specializations within their chosen field. This is one of the most valuable HVAC certifications available, because the tests required for NATE certification come directly from HVAC professionals themselves.
