Avoid the Scams of Duct Cleaning Specials

Damien McCusker

If you're like most homeowners, you know that contaminants can collect in your home's ductwork over time, and that it needs to be cleaned out periodically to keep your HVAC system functioning properly. When you decide to have your ducts cleaned, it's vital to be aware that there are scam artists out there who offer special “deals” that can cost you too much for cleaning that's not even effective. Here are some warning signs of a duct cleaning scam:

Unrealistic Price

If a company tells you they'll clean your home's ductwork for an unbelievably low price, it's likely too good to be true. Typically, these deals only include cleaning a few ducts, and the fine print of the contract allows the company to inflate the amount you'll ultimately pay.

Multiple Complaints

There are a number of reliable sites online where you can check how other homeowners rate the services of duct cleaning companies. Organizations like the Better Business Bureau (BBB) also have complaint records for companies available online. If you find multiple negative reviews and complaints about a particular company, it's a red flag that you shouldn't ignore.

No Online History

If you find nothing about a company when you attempt to research their reputation online, it's a sign that they're either inexperienced or a fly-by-night outfit.

Scare Tactics

When a company's sales rep gives you dire warnings about the hazards of dirty ducts to convince you that yours need immediate cleaning, beware. This is a scare tactic to keep you from checking the company's reputation or comparing prices, because even if your ducts are extremely dirty, it's unlikely that it's an emergency situation.

Lack of Knowledge

When you ask, a trustworthy and experienced service provider should be able to explain their cleaning process in detail. A good duct cleaning service should employ a truck-mounted vacuum and air hose introduced at specific access points to remove debris from your ducts, and clean your HVAC equipment too so your entire system is contaminant-free.
