Ways You Can Save Money With a Smart Home

Damien McCusker

Smart homes just keep on getting smarter. There appears to be no end to the ways smart technology can be adapted for your convenience, comfort, safety and savings. So let's look at some scenarios where smart technology could be used in your home, with a particular emphasis on smart home savings.

Appliances

It's always helpful to our budgets to save on water, gas and electricity. Smart appliances help you do just that by offering you efficient options, plus they can help you keep your fast-paced life a little more organized. Here are some examples:

  • Smart refrigerators can remind you when you're out of milk while you're away from home so you don't have to make an extra trip.
  • Smart washers let you know when it's time to put the clothes in the dryer, so you don't let them wrinkle.
  • Smart ovens remind you that you that you left something cooking in the oven and didn't turn the oven off.

Smart sensors could also notify you about leaks from the clothes or dish washer, or potential fire hazards from the dryer or oven.

Smart Thermostat

Wi-Fi thermostats allow you to operate your HVAC system from afar, turning the heat or cooling up or down as the weather changes. If you have humidity issues in your home, sensors can alert you when you need to turn on the dehumidifier. The thermostat app may also let you turn on the heat or cooling as you approach home so it will be comfortable when you arrive.

Another convenient feature of Wi-Fi thermostats is that they can alert you when it's time to change your filter, when it's time for regular maintenance or when an operational problem is detected.

Smart Cameras

If you have hesitated to sign a home security contract because of the expense, you're not alone. Fortunately, smart cameras can be installed that allow you to monitor your home inside and out while you're away. For some homeowners, this is a reasonable alternative to signing on with a home security firm.
