Appliances That Affect Energy Bills

Appliances That Affect Energy BillsDo you dread receiving your next energy bill? The reason it's likely to be high is your energy usage. Household appliances are significant contributors to your energy costs. Here's a look at some of the culprits that could be affecting your energy bills the most:

Refrigerator

Your old fridge might look good in your kitchen, but it may also be driving your energy bill through the roof. If it has lasted more than 15 years or can't cool to below four degrees, it's time to hit the appliance aisle. The refrigerators you can buy today are cheaper to run. They use about 40 percent less energy than those manufactured 15 years ago.

Washer/Dryer

Washers and dryers are usually costly to repair. If yours are more than 10 years old, consider upgrading to newer, more efficient models. In the long run, an energy efficient washer and dryer will save you money by lowering your energy bills.

Dishwasher

Has your dishwasher already attained the minimum driving age? It's time to upgrade it. Newer dishwashers use about 70 percent less energy than the equivalent models built in the early 1990s.

Appliances You Should Unplug

Most probably, you have many appliances that you leave plugged in even when they're not being used. Believe it or not, these appliances still consume energy even when turned off, costing you money. Electronics use a significant amount of power even when they're in standby mode. It pays to reduce the number of devices you have plugged in throughout the day.

Here are some of the items you should unplug to save energy and money:

  • Computers
  • Televisions
  • Modems
  • Cable boxes
  • DVD players
  • Coffeemakers
  • Stereos and radios
  • Toasters
  • Lamps
