Signs Your A/C System is Dying

Signs Your A/C System is DyingLike all systems in your home, your air conditioner will inevitably break down and need repair or replacement. The cost of keeping a dying air conditioner can be more than that of buying a new one in the long run. So how can you know if your A/C system is on its last leg? Here are the warning signs you should look for:

Your System Runs Around the Clock

One big problem with many malfunctioning A/C units is they run all day. This can be due to low refrigerant levels or accumulation of debris and can result in the premature death of your unit. Call an HVAC specialist to adjust your refrigerant to the proper level or diagnose and repair any other problem your system may be having.

Unusual Noises

Do you hear clunking, shuttering, or any other weird sounds coming from your A/C unit when it's starting up or running? That could be a sign of loose wiring or components, obstructions, or buildup of debris. These problems can cause your air conditioner to fail prematurely. Talk to an HVAC technician about the strange sounds before it's too late.

Regularly Tripping Circuit Breaker

If your air conditioner continually trips your circuit breaker, it could be having a major problem such as a compressor failure. Hire a professional to find the problem.

System Won't Always Turn On

Your thermostat tells your A/C unit when to turn and off. If your unit stays off despite the thermostat indicating it should turn on, it will need repair.

Increased Energy Costs

Has there been an upward trend in your energy bills over the last few years? There could be a slow decline in the energy efficiency of your air conditioning system, making it a good candidate for retirement.

If your A/C system is exhibiting any of these signs, don't automatically assume you need a replacement. First, seek out an expert diagnosis by a qualified professional.
