Prepare Your HVAC System to Spring Forward

Phil Laprairie

Prepare Your HVAC System to Spring ForwardSpringtime is almost here and with it comes the return of Daylight Saving Time. As you prepare to “spring forward,” now is a good time to think about how to prepare your HVAC system for warmer temperatures. Here are a few tips you can use to spring forward and get your HVAC system ready for the spring and summer:

  • Inspect and, if necessary, replace your HVAC system’s air filter. Ideally, this should be done on a monthly basis, but it's not out of the ordinary for homeowners to forget about their filters throughout the previous winter.
  • Check your HVAC ductwork for any signs of holes, cracks or loose connections. All three can cause dust and other debris to get into the HVAC unit.
  • Make sure there's no mold growth or debris on the evaporator coil within the indoor cabinet. If necessary, gently clean the coil with mild detergent and a soft brush.
  • Make sure the drainage hole on the base of the indoor cabinet is clear of any debris. Use a shop vacuum to suck out any clogs you happen to encounter.
  • Take a look at the outdoor condenser cabinet that's part of your HVAC system and get rid of any vegetation or debris that's accumulated around the bottom of the unit. If necessary, take a garden hose and rinse any debris you find off the condenser coil.
  • Don't forget to have your HVAC system’s refrigerant charge checked by your HVAC technician. Doing this task on your own can be exceptionally dangerous, which is why it's best left to a technician with the right training and years of experience on hand.

It's also good idea to test your air conditioning unit while temperatures are relatively cool. If you run into any problems with the way your HVAC system operates, you can have these issues taken care of before the summer heat arrives.
