Energy Star Logo: Get HVAC Products That Are More Energy EfficientEver since its inception in 1992, the Energy Star logo has helped consumers quickly identify products that offer better energy efficiency. When you’re looking at a new HVAC system, this logo makes it simpler to identify cooling and heating products that will cut energy costs and consumption.

Keeping a home comfortable year-round requires a good deal of energy. The EPA estimates that a typical household spends half of its annual energy budget on staying comfortable indoors. It makes financial sense to use this logo to narrow down equipment choices from the start. The logo may be on the product's packaging or on the EnergyGuide label in the lower right hand corner.

Earning the Logo

Products submitted to the Energy Star program have to demonstrate that they meet specific requirements before gaining approval, such as the following.

  • The product has to prove that it pays for itself over a reasonable period. Energy Star-certified equipment typically costs more up front, but pays for itself in lower energy bills.
  • HVAC systems have to work well under a variety of climatic conditions.
  • Energy usage must be verified through equipment testing.
  • The improvements that boost energy efficiency have to meet consumer demand and expectations for comfort and performance.

Benefits

Cutting cooling and heating bills without sacrificing comfort is the most important benefit of choosing equipment carrying the Energy Star logo, along with other tangible advantages.

  • Although system durability depends on how well the new system is installed and maintained, Energy Star systems tend to last longer since they achieve greater efficiency by using higher quality components.
  • Periodically, governmental jurisdictions make rebates, tax credits or other incentives available to homeowners who install Energy Star equipment.
  • Energy Star HVAC systems reduce the harmful environmental impacts that power and fuel generation cause. According to the City of Calgary, most of the energy Calgarians use comes from fossil fuels, which are polluting and nonrenewable energy sources.
