Simple Maintenance Tips for Your Home Heating Boiler

Simple Maintenance Tips for Your Home Heating BoilerIt's never too late in the heating season to maintain your home heating boiler. Even though most maintenance tasks need to be performed by an HVAC professional, undertaking some of these projects yourself will keep your boiler in good running condition in between visits.

  • Examine your system by looking for problems with your vent and chimney. Cracks and holes may indicate problems that need immediate professional attention, as does a heat exchanger that leaks. Any cracks in the system can spew carbon monoxide (CO) into your home. If you have a CO detector that shows periodic readings of CO levels in your home's air, consider placing it near your boiler to check CO levels as the boiler runs. Rising levels may indicate CO is leakage, which can create a life-threatening situation.
  • Check your pressure gauge to make sure it's operating in a safe range. If the pressure is too low or high, you'll need professional servicing immediately.
  • Drain a bit of water from the boiler and its float chamber and check for quality. If it's full of sediment, you may need to drain and flush the entire system. Hard water deposits in either chamber can block the flow of water through the system, reducing its ability to heat your home.
  • Clean the area around your boiler, removing anything that's blocking it, especially flammable objects.
