Improve Your Ventilation Before You Have to Close Up the House

Phil Laprairie

10.02.13Natural convection will circulate air slowly, but isn’t enough alone if you want good, consistent air circulation to all parts of your house. A mechanical ventilation system is a combination of fans and ducts that provide good airflow year round.

In the summer when you frequently have windows and doors open, ventilation systems are not absolutely necessary. However, once you reach that transition period between fall and winter it’s important to have a functioning system in place for a variety of reasons.

Why Ventilation Is Important

There are many benefits of a ventilation system, the most important one being the resulting improvement in air quality. Mould, pollutants and allergens are commonly trapped and circulated in homes without ventilation systems, which can adversely affect your short and long-term health.

Another major benefit is the consistency and control of airflow. When you rely on natural convection you never know how fast air will circulate or where it will come from, which means you could be breathing in air from your dusty garage or attic. A ventilation system will let you regulate airflow and make sure that all sources of high quality air are connected together.

Which Venting System Do You Need?

There are actually many different types of home ventilation systems: exhaust, supply, balanced, and energy or heat recovery. The right system for you will depend on your local climate conditions, because all of systems have their own strengths and weaknesses.

In order to get the most effective and cost efficient home ventilation system, it’s a good idea to consult an HVAC professional. If you live in Calgary you can contact Arpi’s Industries Ltd. for more information.
