Fall Maintenance: Schedule Yours Before the Cold Winds Blow

Phil Laprairie

09.24.13Fall is almost here, which means soon there will be a window of time when you’re not using your HVAC unit. This is the perfect time to get some routine maintenance work out of the way.

One of the most important fall maintenance tips will be getting your unit checked out by a professional. HVAC systems have been designed to run a long time and to only need minimal repair work. Too often, homeowners assume that means they never need to get the unit checked out by a professional. Nothing could be further from the truth. The professional repair tech know what issues particular models are likely to present, and will also have the tools needed to complete all repairs.
Getting your HVAC system serviced during the autumn has several advantages which include:

  • extending the number of years you will be able to use the unit
  • preventing sudden breakdowns
  • keeping your unit as energy efficient as it can possibly be

Routine fall maintenance services include:

The good news is that you can do some of the work yourself. One of the tasks you will be able to handle will be replacing your HVAC unit’s filter, which you should have been doing anyway. The clean filter lessens the chances of any debris or dust falling from the filter during dormant periods and clogging the unit.

To clean your own ducts, remove the heating vent covers and use the vacuum to remove any dust from the vent cover and the duct. Eliminating the dust means your HVAC unit won’t have to work as hard and that you’ll be breathing cleaner air.

Remember, the more diligent you are about staying on top of your fall maintenance work, the longer your unit will work efficiently.
