A 5-Step Guide To Hiring An HVAC Contractor -- And Getting ResultsHave you made it a goal in 2012 to improve the energy efficiency of your home? You’ll probably need to hire an HVAC contractor to perform the work, and this easy five-step guide can help to ensure that you cover all the necessary bases. After all, you’re trusting your home comfort and future energy savings — along with a sizeable investment — to the person who helps you select and then install the equipment, so it’s critical that the job is done right.

Here are some questions you should ask when you talk to an HVAC contractor:

What are your credentials?

When looking for a contractor to perform your energy-efficiency upgrades, you want to select one that is experienced in that line of work. If it’s an installation job, ask about installation certifications, training and experience. It’s also important to ask if the contractor will perform all of the work, or if some portion will be sub-contracted.

Can you give me a few references?

Homeowners like to rely on – and they trust – word-of-mouth references, usually from friends and family. But it can also be valuable to check out the work the contractor has performed with previous clients. It’s likely that the contractor will use satisfied customers, but that’s okay. Just be prepared with a list of questions to ask these customers, and follow through by calling every reference.

Will you review the contract with me?

The contract should include line items that show specific costs for labour, equipment, and any additional work to be performed. Make sure a start and end date is included, as well as clean-up procedures.

Do you offer a warranty?

Having a warranty will protect you in case of a malfunctioning system. Never proceed with any project without one.

What kind of guarantee does the contract include?

You can rest assured that a contractor that backs up his or her work with a guarantee will quickly remedy any possible problems.
