Furnace Repair Or Replace Made Easy With 7 Simple Tips

Phil Laprairie

Wondering if it’s that time? A furnace repair or replace decision can be quite difficult, as it requires a significant investment, often in both cases. There are signs, however, that you can use to help answer that question.

If you wait too long, you might find yourself with a malfunctioning furnace, needing to quickly replace it to avoid a period of time without heat. Take the time now, when you’re not hard-pressed to make a hasty decision, to evaluate seven warning signs that indicate that a replacement is in order:

  • Age – Most furnaces should operate well for about 15 years, particularly if they receive regular maintenance. If your system is nearing that age, you should start evaluating a new furnace.
  • High utility bills – As a furnace ages, it begins to lose its efficiency, a result of dirt buildup over time and components wearing out. If you notice your energy bills rising, it might be time to replace.
  • Significant repairs – Older furnaces require more repairs, and it’s often wiser to invest repair money in a new system that will produce higher energy savings and improved comfort.
  • Comfort – Cold or hot zones in certain rooms of your home can be an indication that your furnace can no longer perform.
  • Noises – A sure indication that there’s a problem, furnace noises can indicate a significant repair is on the horizon. And it’s often a smarter move to replace.
  • Safety – It’s not uncommon for a furnace’s heat exchanger to be compromised as it ages. When it cracks, it can lead to serious carbon monoxide hazards. Be sure to have your heat exchanger inspected annually to ward off problems. If it does crack, you’ll have to replace the furnace immediately.
  • Indoor air quality – Your home’s indoor air could be seriously compromised as a furnace ages. A damaged burner can pose problems, and an older furnace with an inefficient furnace blower often lacks the capacity to move air throughout the home.
